Unlocking the Power of Reading: My Speech-to-Print Approach

As a reading tutor and advocate for evidence-based practices, I know that teaching a child to read can feel both exhilarating and overwhelming. If your child is struggling to connect the dots between letters and sounds or building the confidence to read fluently, I’m here to tell you: there’s a proven, effective way to help.

My approach centers on a Speech-to-Print methodology, an evidence-based method that aligns with how the brain naturally processes language. It’s efficient, research-backed, and designed to help children learn to read quickly and effectively.

What Is Speech-to-Print reading instruction?

Unlike traditional "Print-to-Speech" methods that start with visual letters and move toward associating sounds (so slow!), the Speech-to-Print approach flips the script—and for good reason.

Speech-to-Print begins with what children already know: spoken language. It uses a systematic process to connect spoken sounds (phonemes) to their corresponding written forms (graphemes). This process ensures that children not only learn to decode words but also understand their structure, meaning, and usage.

Why it works:

  • Spoken language is a natural skill; reading is not. By starting with speech, we build on existing strengths.

  • It creates a deeper understanding of phonemic awareness, which is critical for decoding words and spelling.

  • It prevents common struggles with letter-sound confusion by creating a direct and logical connection.

Why Speech-to-Print Gets Kids Reading Faster

The Speech-to-Print methodology simplifies the learning process by addressing the root of reading challenges. Instead of overwhelming children with rules and exceptions, it prioritizes the natural progression of:

  1. Hearing and identifying sounds (phonemic awareness).

  2. Matching sounds to letters (phonics).

  3. Combining letters into words (decoding).

  4. Understanding words and sentences (comprehension).

This streamlined and integrated process reduces frustration, builds confidence, and ensures fast and steady progress.

How I Use Speech-to-Print to Help Your Child Learn to Read

In my tutoring sessions, I create a supportive and fun learning environment tailored to your child’s needs. Using Speech-to-Print strategies, we:

  1. Build Phonemic Awareness

    • Games and activities help children recognize and manipulate sounds in spoken words. This is done WITH letters as soon as a child is ready (as early as age 3).

    • We break words into their individual sounds/syllables and practice blending them back together.

  2. Introduce Phonics Systematically

    • Starting with the most common sounds, we build from simple to complex patterns. We do this in the context or real words and incorporate mutisyllabic words as soon as possible.

    • I use multi-sensory teaching techniques to reinforce learning. Children are grounded in patterns, a natural human desire.

  3. Practice Decoding and Encoding

    • Children learn to read words by sounding them out and to write words by segmenting sounds. Children are challenged at their own pace.

    • Real-world applications like reading stories and writing short sentences reinforce skills. (reading and writing are reciprocal!)

  4. Build Fluency and Comprehension

    • While decoding is becoming automatic, we also focus on fluency, vocabulary, and understanding. We use graphic organizers and easily applicable routines in tutoring sessions.

Encouragement for Parents

I know it’s hard to watch your child struggle with reading—it can feel like you’re both climbing an uphill battle. But here’s the good news: with the right approach, your child can thrive.

Reading is a skill, not a talent. It’s not about being “naturally good” at it but about using the right methods to unlock your child’s potential. If your child is struggling, they don't have a reading or writing problem, they have a teaching problem. The Speech-to-Print approach is designed to work with your child’s brain, not against it.

With consistent practice and expert guidance, your child can become a confident, fluent, proficient reader.
